The British Grooms Association wants all grooms to only work in positions of Good Employment.

Your employer has a responsibility to employ you legally and correctly. We are here to protect our members and to help you understand what Good Employment looks like.

Good Employment

Watch Millie's story - Does any of this sound familiar to you? Grooms should only work for employers who believe in Good Employment, and don't work for those who don't!

Your employment

Are you employed correctly?

BGA research consistently shows that incorrect employment and false self-employment are common problems in the equestrian industry.

Too many grooms are being classed as self-employed when, in reality, they’re working as employees - and it’s costing them.

Employing legally isn’t a choice, it’s the law. Employers have a responsibility to get it right, but it’s also up to you, as a groom, to educate yourself, recognise poor or illegal employment, and call it out.

If you're in a position of false self-employment then you're missing out on vital legal rights and benefits, including paid holiday, sick pay, and pension contributions.

Find out if you’re employed correctly with our step-by-step guide.

MENTAL HEALTH REPORT

Last year, the BGA conducted an online survey to uncover the impact of poor employment practices on the mental health and well-being of grooms.

The results are not pretty and identify high levels of anxiety and depression within the equestrian workforce.
