A GROOMS LIFE BLOG

Who'd have thought I'd have lasted this long?!

Steph Sharples is the Yard Manager at Hughes Dressage where she over sees the day to day running of the yard and is Gareth’s travelling groom.

We caught up with BGA member Steph to find out more about her journey so far.

When you started working with horses what were your plans/ expectations?

When I started working for Gareth in Cheshire 17 years ago I was a working pupil working towards my NVQ Level 2. I remember feeling very nervous thinking I now had a ‘proper job’. It was incredible to see the calibre of horses and the care that they received from the staff. At the beginning I had no idea how long I would last or any long term plans, I just wanted to learn and was in the perfect place to do that.

17 years ago I started my job as a working pupil, who’d have thought I’d have lasted this long and done what I have done...there have been some amazing experiences, adventures and memories I will treasure forever.

What have been the most outstanding highlights you have had so far?

The first European call up in 2013 was very special. We were team GB reserve and had just 24 hours notice to get ready to leave for Herning, Denmark.
Another memorable moment is last year at the European’s in Rotterdam. Classic Briolinca got three personal best scores and finished in top 10 in all three classes as well as being the best of the brits, which was just incredible.

It’s not all about the competitions, what else do you love about your job?

The horses! Doing everything for them, sharing the good times and the bad times. I love the journey you take with them from young horses to international Grand Prix level. The bond you make is amazing and they become best friends.

Who is your ultimate favourite horse and why?

This one is really hard for me to answer as I have a few to choose from. I have been so lucky to have looked after some amazing horses who we have become best of friends. Classic Sandman took me to my first big international and first international wins so will always have a special place.
Duvie and I bonded so well after I nursed him through two colic surgeries and spent so much time with him, and then there is Briolinca who I have shared so much with. We are best friends and I really do love her.

What opportunities has being an international competition groom created for you?

I’ve had the opportunity to work with and alongside so many incredible, talented inspiring people, care for amazing horses, travel the world, overcome fears and make some amazing friends.

What would you say to anyone who is not sure that they can make horses a career?

Absolutely you can. It takes hard work, determination, commitment and a willingness/open mind to keep learning but the rewards are amazing and ones you won’t forget.

We know that you will have many stories along the way – any funny moments that you can share..?!

The one that springs to mind is my first big international in 2011 at Fritzens. Sandman and I travelled with Alan (Davies), Bluebs (Valegro) and Uti (Utopia). I hadn’t met Alan before this trip so I was very nervous! The return journey was so hot we were literally dripping in sweat driving along so we kept cool by putting ice boots on our head. This kept us giggling for quite a few years!

In five years I would like to be…

Still here, loving my job but having groomed at an Olympics.

Thanks to Steph for sharing some of her journey with us. If you’d like to become a BGA member like Steph have a look at how we can support you all the way through your career.
