TRAVEL INSURANCE for Horse Riders

If you are planning on riding or working abroad with horses you will need a specific travel insurance.

Holiday travel insurance will not cover you whilst working abroad with horses.

Credit card accident cover, home insurance, EHIC or private health cover is also not sufficient for the cover you will need.

My choices

Since the beginning of the pandemic the majority of travel insurance providers have not provided cover for Covid 19 related events.

In addition, as working with or competing horses is not seen as 'essential business' some travel insurance providers have ceased to offer cover on a policy when the FCDO has advised against all but essential travel.

The EEA has tried to source appropriate cover, and have found a product with True Traveller Insurance UK.

However, if someone is travelling to an area where the UK Foreign Office has a warning in place specifically for COVID, then it means that no claim will be met specifically for COVID on this policy.

However, the good news is that all other medical claims for sudden unexpected illness or accidents will be met as normal and so we urge any rider (and their grooms) travelling to purchase this affordable policy.

True traveller Insurance

True Traveller offers a policy which covers riders and grooms whilst they are performing the majority of their duties.*see exemptions below

It is affordable and most importantly it does cover in countries that the FCDO advises against all but essential travel.

However, it is important to note that it does not cover anything that is covid related and it is critical that you have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC formally the EHIC) too before travelling.

PURCHASE MY TRAVEL INSURANCE

As a rider you will need to select ' Extreme Pack' and this will cover you to ride competitively and showjump - see further details below.

For your grooms, they will need to select 'Adventure Pack' to cover for their work abroad. Be aware that this policy does NOT cover for jumping or any competing, and if this is required then upgrade to Extreme.

Will The insurance cover me for riding?

The Extreme Pack option allows Horse Riding (Dressage, Show jumping and Eventing) HOWEVER CRITICALLY, this does not cover 'competing at international events as a national representative'.

However we have sought claritificion and if you are not competing as part of a team, then the policy can cover you. So in the case of Sunshine Tours, yes it will cover you, however if you are on a team, eg. Nations Cup or at a championships, it will not offer cover.

DOes it cover riders that compete

Yes, in the case of competing as an individual, and not as part of a British Team, the policy is available to you as an international rider.

You need to select
' Extreme Pack'.

Does it cover me as I am working

Yes it is a policy that covers you for working when you are abroad.

Can i see the policy wording

Yes you can download it here

Why do I need travel insurance?

Unfortunately unforeseen emergencies and accidents can and do happen, so it is important to think carefully about your specific travel insurance needs.

As you will be working abroad, any recreational (holiday) policy will not cover you.

You need a specific policy that covers for work purposes (and includes horse riding) and which will provide cover for medical expenses and repatriation to the UK.

The EEA strongly advises all riders and their grooms who work abroad to have appropriate travel insurance in place before leaving the UK.

What about the EHIC CARD?

It is important to note that the policies do not cover anything that is covid related and it is critical that you have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC formally the EHIC) too before travelling.

If you have an EHIC Card and it is not out of date, then that is ok.

When it expires you will renew it with the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC formally the EHIC).

You may think that the EHIC/GHIC covers you when you are working as a groom in Europe. Things, however, are not as straightforward as many of us think.

The EHIC does entitle holders to medical treatment in all EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, on the same basis as an “insured” resident of these countries.

However, it may not cover all that you would expect to get here under the NHS and you may also have to pay for part of the treatment.

Here you will find at-a-glance details
of what you can expect to be charged and what you can reclaim in each of the countries covered by the EHIC.

The EHIC will cover you for medical treatment in state hospitals but there are certain things that are not covered such as emergency medical treatment and repatriation to the UK after an accident.

What happens if i don't have it?

You are taking a big risk. Who will pay your medical and repatriation expenses if you fell ill or an accident happened?

The EEA has worked hard on behalf of our members to source suitable insurance, it is affordable, so please do not travel withouth it.

What about my grooms

It is highly recommended that international travelling grooms have travel insurance when working abroad. What would you do if they had an accident when they are working for you abroad?

They can also get a bespoke and suitable policy here
