Five minutes with ......Emma

We grabbed a few minutes with BGA member Emma Hartwell, groom to Emily and Mary King.

How long have you been working for the Kings?

I have worked full time with the Kings for four years. Currently there are 10 in work, plus lots of babies out in the valley. At home there is me plus one other groom. I hack and do some fast work, but Emily does the schooling.

How does Badminton compare to other events?

This is my third Badminton but first with Emily. It's a very special atmosphere, lovely stables and it's like meeting up with your extended family. Emily is under pressure to replicate her performance in Pau in order for selectors to consider her. This is her debut Badminton and she is a perfectionist.

I find it strange having so much down time as I'm usually so busy. Brook is hogged and I miss doing the plaits.

What prompted you to join the BGA?

I joined to get the insurance as I was going to Pau. You hear about people getting injured and so I felt it was essential having the cover.

I did Groom Clean as part of the Performance Day which was great, and although a lot of it is common sense it's so important that everyone knows about it.
