The British Grooms Association is the professional membership body for all who work with horses.

We want all grooms to only work in positions of Good Employment. This includes having a written contract.
We're conducting a survey to find out how many grooms have been given a written contract of employment in their place of work. It's 100% anonymous and takes less than a minute to do.

Your employment

Do you have a contract?

Employing legally is not a choice and an employer has a responsibility to ensure that everything is done correctly to protect you and themselves.

ALL employees are legally entitled to a Written Statement of the main terms and conditions of employment. By law, this document must be issued to the employee/worker either on, or before, their first day of work. It should include details of things like pay, holidays and working hours.

We want to know if you have a contract in your job. Take our quick, anonymous survey.

Previous research

SURVEY RESULTS

The BGA recently conducted an online survey to uncover the impact of poor employment practices on the mental health and well-being of grooms.

The results are not pretty and identify high levels of anxiety and depression within the equestrian workforce.

MENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS

Poor working conditions are directly linked to high levels of anxiety (65%) and depression (55%) among respondents.

Anger and frustration were reported by 54%, while sadness and confusion were noted by 39% and 32%, respectively. Only 11% of respondents reported no emotional impact from their work.

OTHER FINDINGS

Workplace Bullying and Harassment: 43% reported experiencing bullying, and 8% faced sexual harassment.

Employment Rights Breaches: Issues were identified around contracts, being paid below the National Minimum Wage, pensions, false self employment and annual leave.
