I wish I'd bothered to upgrade...

Amanda got in touch as she wanted to share her story.

I joined the British Grooms Association on Bronze membership whilst I was at university because I wasn’t earning a weekly wage so there was no need for me to pay the extra at that time.

I am fully aware of what Total Temporary Disablement cover is, however as I had no wage when I joined, having a membership any higher than Bronze wouldn’t have made a big difference to my circumstances.

Once I’d finished university I went straight into work and I was aware that my insurance wouldn’t cover my wages if I were to get injured.

I had considered on many times upgrading my membership, but it was probably down to my slight ignorance and laziness that I never bothered to upgrade!

Now I 100% wish I had upgraded straight away. It’s so simple and easy to do and would’ve helped me out so much. I’m now sat at home waiting for an MRI scan to see how much damage there is to my injury. The unknown of whether I’m to have two weeks off or either weeks is very daunting, especially as my wages aren’t covered due to the level of insurance I had.

My accident was a freak one that was no one’s fault. The young horse unfortunately spooked whilst I was on board and my foot got caught resulting in a suspected knee dislocation (which went straight back in), however there could be some damage to my ligaments and cartilage.

However safe you try to be, the likelihood of accidents is still around and it’s so important to be insured. You set out on your day not expecting that it could quite literally be flipped upside down, so to have that backup insurance is essential.

I would 100% advise other grooms to have, or upgrade their insurance, to a suitable type for them. If you’re not sure just pick up the phone and the lovely BGA people will help. I’ve learnt the tricky way and now face a scary couple of weeks! Even if your job doesn’t include immediate contact with horses, other accidents can happen whilst on a yard and it’s best to be covered no matter what!

Thank you to Amanda for sharing her story.
