I feel more secure for having a contract

We were contacted by one of our lovely British Grooms Association members who got in touch to share how she feels about having a written contract (Statement of Employment Particulars).

"I contacted the BGA after seeing they were running #GiveMeAContractWeek as I wanted to share my experiences.

I’ve been in my current employment for just under four years. I work for a lovely lady, with nice horses and I really enjoy my job.

The lady I work for is a little ‘old fashioned’ when it comes to things like contracts and pay slips and this was the only downside of my employment. We had agreed verbally on how much I was getting paid and my days off, and she always kept her word, but I never had it in writing.

I had mentioned it to her a few times but nothing was ever done about it. Whenever we discussed it she would always apologise and say she would do it, but then she never got around to it.

I don’t think this was her deliberately trying not to give me a contract or pay slips, I just think she didn’t really know how to do it and was a bit afraid that she might get into trouble for not having issued one before.

Because I’m happy in my job I really let it go until I saw something about the Equestrian Employers Association Contract Creator. I went and had a look around the website and sent my boss the link to it.

The next day when I arrived at work she gave me a contract to sign and said she had contacted someone through the Equestrian Employers Association to organise my payslips. I now even have a pension.

It was such a relief and even though I’d never felt unhappy in my job I felt so much more secure for having a written document and being legally employed. I don’t think I realised until after what a big deal it was for me in the way I was feeling.

My boss, by her own admission, is of a generation that are not a computer literate and she said that she found the whole process easier than she thought. She also said to me that she is happier knowing that I have the correct paperwork in place.

My advice to anyone reading this would be to discuss it with your boss, tell them how you are feeling and point them in the direction of the Equestrian Employers Association website. As well as being a legal requirement it also makes you feel more secure and might even make your boss feel better too."
