A GROOMS LIFE BLOG

An insight to Carriage Driving

BGA member and Ambassador, driving groom Mandy Elder blogs from the National Carriage Driving Championships.

Hi, I'm Mandy Elder your new BGA Ambassador for carriage driving and I thought you might like a little insight as to what it’s like being a groom at a carriage driving event.

Yesterday (Wednesday) myself and fellow groom Callum MacDonald left Scotland and headed to National Carriage Driving Championships at Bywell.

Unlike some other disciplines it is normal for us to travel separately to our horses and driver. This is largely due to the fact that when we arrive at an event there are no temporary stables, or fields, we have to make our own.

As soon as the horses arrive onsite we set to work building stables, which fold out from the lorry. We also make electric fenced areas for the horses to have turn out. We like to keep the horses in as normal routine as possible and they all appreciate having some turn out at an event.

We then set up the caravans and tents and Callum and I enjoyed a drink in the evening sunshine. The driving community is a really lovely and sociable one so it’s always nice to catch up with other drivers and grooms at these events.

Tomorrow we will get to know the course and take the team of horses for a drive. I’m always very happy and excited to be at an event and am looking forward to the next few days.

Mandy.
