A GROOMS LIFE BLOG

The day that changed my life...

Experienced freelance polo groom and BGA member Frances Harvey went to work last July like it was any other day. Little did she know that it was a day that would change her life.

We spoke to Frances who shares her story.

“At the time in question I was freelance polo groom to two separate Patrons.

I was working a polo pony when she fly bucked and I was launched through the air. I landed on a sand track.

I knew I was injured, but I got up immediately and finished my days work. Later on that day I started to feel much worse. I knew that my teeth were broken, but when I went to hospital they told me that I had also broken my ribs, torn my intercostal muscles and had an inguinal hernia, in addition to my very painful lower back.

I was off work for three months, and without my KBIS personal accident insurance I would have found it difficult to survive and to live.

The reason I had personal accident insurance was because my Patrons wouldn’t hire me if I didn’t. The yard owner, where they kept the ponies, also insisted that I had insurance.

I think employers should either insist grooms have insurance, or provide it.

It’s not expensive and the amount of inconvenience not having it causes if you get injured can be catastrophic. It is worth every penny because if you don’t work when you’re self-employed – you don’t get paid.

My advice - I think personal accident insurance is essential and that all grooms should have it.”
