The ultimate goal

We spoke to BGA member Charlotte Attwell, competition groom to Joe Stockdale, just before they travelled to the LONGINES FEI Jumping European Championship in Reisenbeck, Germany, to find out more about her and Cacharel.

"I originally came to the Stockdale's yard six years ago, just to do some work experience with Tim, Joe's father, and I’ve been here ever since!

I had been working in a riding school and I wanted to try something different. After a few days, Tim asked if I would consider working for him full time. Initially I was a home groom so that I could learn the ropes, just going out to a few shows here and there.

Eventually, I began going to bigger shows with Tim and so I got my HGV licence. Joe only did a few shows back then as he was playing cricket, but when Tim passed away in November 2018 Joe took on the yard and horses.

Joe and I now share the driving a lot of the time, so we know each other well, and Otis, my dog comes too.

Tell us about Cacharel

Cacharel (Cash) is the queen of the yard. She knows she is special and is very spoilt, but is quite a fussy eater too. She is very good to do and has the sweetest nature, she loves her treats. I have a special connection with her as I have been with her since she was a three year old and have had the pleasure to be with her through her whole FEI career, something I feel very proud of. The picture is us of us in the trot up at her first ever FEI event. 

getting selected for Team GBR...

Joe came onto the yard and spoke to grooms Carley, Kyle and myself to tell us he had been selected. We are a close knit team and Carley, Kyle and I also share a house. Joe being selected is a massive achievement for the whole team and we are all proud.

I am really excited to be going to a European Championship, representing your country is the ultimate goal. I sometimes think it’s easy to forget what a big thing it is, but when you are at a show and in your Team GBR kit it is a great feeling.

Is this your first time representing Team GBR?

No, Joe jumped his first senior team in October 2020. That was a 3* competition. His first 5* team was in June this summer in Sopot, Poland. We have done some teams, although I imagine, this is going to be a different experience and one I am really looking forward to."
