FIRST AID TRAINING FOR GROOMS 

The BGA are delighted to have teamed up with the First Aid Training Co-operative to offer a free 'Intro to Equestrian First Aid' e-learning course, a bespoke online first aid course that any groom or yard manager can take.

  • Developed by a qualified first aid professional
  • Fully online course and assessment with no time limits
  • Approximate duration: 1 hour
  • On completion, the certificate is downloaded straightaway

This online course will provide you with all the information needed to be able to recognise emergency situations, treat conditions and reactions and ensure that you can take appropriate action at the time of an incident.

Most of us hope to never find ourselves in a situation where we have to apply our first aid training, and the chances of having to perform first aid in our lives are quite rare. However, just like insurance, you hope that when you do need it, you’ve got the right skills to potentially save a life.

The reality is that you never know what might happen, and this is not just about workplace accidents. Having the skills to deal with a first aid situation can benefit you in your personal life as well as your professional life as a groom.

What the personal accident policy covers you for:

  • Whilst at work
  • All stable duties – mucking out, grooming, washing off, turning out
  • Clipping
  • Riding – including hacking and jumping
  • Hunting
  • Lunging
  • Breaking in
  • Holding horse for a vet and other procedures
  • Travelling horses both in the UK and abroad
  • Competing in line with your job including: jumping, dressage, eventing
  • Injuries that may happen to you whilst you are teaching - but you must also be grooming as part of your duties and not be a sole instructor

What the personal accident policy doesn’t cover you for:

  • Riding in a race, point to point or team chase
  • Stunt Riding
  • Accidents occurring whilst travelling to and from work
  • Riding and competing your own horse (but you can upgrade when applying for membership to include this)
  • Public Liability – this is a separate insurance policy - the Freelance Groom Liability Insurance
  • Care Custody and Control – this is a separate policy - the Freelance Groom Liability Insurance
