Supergroom Sarah Charnley, in Paris

25th July 2024

The eventing grooms have arrived in Paris and excitement is brewing for the competition.

We managed to catch up with Sarah Charnley, Supergroom for event rider, Ros Canter.

You went to Tokyo as reserve, so you know the Olympic protocol – are you nervous for Paris 2024?

“I always get nervous, but that’s part of the adrenaline! There is a lot to do, with all that is involved with the horse and equipment as well as making sure that Ros has everything at her fingertips and doesn’t have to worry about anything bar riding.”

Did you pack anything different for the Olympics that you wouldn’t take to a normal event?

“No, it is pretty much the same as per for any 3-day event, except Team GB have provided numnahs. I also had to keep in mind that no logos are allowed on our equipment.”

If you could go to any Olympics, which one would you like to attend? Past or future!

“An Olympics I would quite like to have witnessed would be the Berlin Olympics, before the War, to see Jessie Owens compete in front of Hitler! But I loved London 2012, it was simply amazing and being in the thick of it having been the lead fence judge at fence 3! Seeing everyone backstage who I now know is cool.”

Do you have a team mascot or any new additions for the Olympics?

“I have a cuddly Gruffalo with me and of course, we have been supplied the great Adidas team kit to wear.”

If you could be involved with any other Olympic sport, which one would you choose and why?

“Hockey and athletics. I played hockey to a high level playing against and alongside Olympic players! Playing hockey is how I got to know Ros. I love watching athletics and was an 800m county runner in my day.”

Fast Five

Safari or ski holiday?

"All the above. I really want to go on a riding safari, but I love skiing so want to do both!"

Takeaway or home cooking?

"Cooked meal"

Go to a picnic or a bbq?

"BBQ"

Book or movie?

"Both love a good book but equally like watching a movie."

Groom for a showjumper or a dressage rider.

"I’ve done the show jump bit as a teenager, so let’s try a dressage rider!!"

Thanks Sarah for speaking with us, we hope you have a fantastic time in Paris.

Make sure you don't miss the action, if you want to watch all of the coverage from Paris see our recent annoucement of 'how to watch the Olympics'.
