Dreaming of being a groom at the Olympic and Paralympic Games? For some grooms it’s a case of working hard to chase their dream and for others, fate steps in to ensure they reach their destiny. The universe aligned to make sure Betsy Smetham jetted off to Paris 2024 as part of Team Ireland with Grade 3 para dressage rider Jessica McKenna and Davidoff 188. 20-year-old Betsy originally from Kent, relocated to Bath for University two years ago. Having competed up to FEI level herself she moved her mare to Elder Klatzko's yard, who is based just outside of Bath, so that she could carry on training. It was a 'right place, right time' situation, as towards the end of last year, Jess also moved her horse Davidoff to Elder's yard. Jess needed a groom for the following season and everything just fell into place – Betsy’s journey to the Paralympics began! Ahead of the Paralympics we met with Betsy to find out what it’s like to be jetting off to the Games for the first time. How do you feel about heading to Paris? “This is Jess' first Paralympics, so it's super exciting for the whole team, everyone is such a joy to work with, and we all can't wait to enjoy the experience together.” What are you looking forward to doing whilst at the games? “I'm most excited about seeing the venue - having seen all the pictures from the Olympics, Versailles looks incredible and we're all so excited to see it in person! Jess and I are also really looking forward to having a look around the athlete’s village.” What is Davidoff like? “David has the biggest personality, he's such a dude to look after. The key to his heart is through scratches and bananas! So easy to take away and just loves his job. He really takes care of Jess when they're competing, and I love watching them together.” We wish Jess, Betsy and David the best of luck throughout the Games.

What the personal accident policy covers you for:
- Whilst at work
- All stable duties – mucking out, grooming, washing off, turning out
- Clipping
- Riding – including hacking and jumping
- Hunting
- Lunging
- Breaking in
- Holding horse for a vet and other procedures
- Travelling horses both in the UK and abroad
- Competing in line with your job including: jumping, dressage, eventing
- Injuries that may happen to you whilst you are teaching - but you must also be grooming as part of your duties and not be a sole instructor
What the personal accident policy doesn’t cover you for:
- Riding in a race, point to point or team chase
- Stunt Riding
- Accidents occurring whilst travelling to and from work
- Riding and competing your own horse (but you can upgrade when applying for membership to include this)
- Public Liability – this is a separate insurance policy - the Freelance Groom Liability Insurance
- Care Custody and Control – this is a separate policy - the Freelance Groom Liability Insurance
