We're incredibly proud to share the news that Lucy Katan, founder and Executive Director of the British Grooms Association, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her outstanding services to sport and equestrian industry.

Lucy founded the British Grooms Association in 2007, recognising the urgent need for a dedicated organisation to represent, support and speak up for grooms.

Since then, Lucy has worked tirelessly to:

  • Raise awareness of the rights and value of grooms,
  • Improve working conditions and employment standards,
  • Promote mental health and wellbeing in the workplace,
  • Build a stronger voice for grooms in the wider equestrian community.
“To receive an MBE is truly humbling,” said Lucy. “But this award is not just for me – it’s for every groom who works tirelessly, day in and day out, to care for horses across our industry. Grooms are the unsung heroes of equestrianism, and I’m proud that this honour helps shine a light on their vital role.”

Thanks to Lucy’s vision and leadership, the BGA now supports thousands of members across the UK and beyond. From Olympic and international event grooms to riding school grooms, livery grooms and freelance grooms, our members know that they are part of a community that champions them.

In addition to the BGA, Lucy also founded The Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) which provides employers with advice, guidance and easy-to-use legally compliant templates. She passionately believes that providing support to both sides is the solution to achieving an industry of only good employment

Lucy’s MBE is a proud moment for the entire BGA and EEA family – a recognition of how far we’ve come as an organisation and a profession.

To every groom reading this: this award is for you. You are the backbone of our sport. You deserve to be seen, respected, and treated fairly – and we will continue to work hard every day to make sure that happens.
