Top Groom receives the BGA Lifetime Achievement Award

A BGA Lifetime Achievement Award has been presented to Alan Davies, for his absolute dedication to his career.

Super groom to Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester, Alan is an exceptional individual who is well known for his passion for his horses and in particular his relationship with Blueberry (Valegro).

Alan has been an integral part of the journey that Charlotte and Blueberry and has groomed all around the world, including World Championships and Olympic Games.

Alan Davies says “I still can't believe the BGA have given me the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award means so much to me. The BGA do so much to support and promote grooms on so many levels and to be recognised by them in this way is quite an honour. 

I've been a groom for over 30 years now and have worked in many areas of the equestrian industry, I am so proud to have been working with Carl and Charlotte over the last few years, with amazing horses and seeing them win many medals between them. I hope this award will help encourage other people to be grooms and see that it can be profession to be proud of.”

In 2015 Alan was awarded Team GB Groom of the Year and in earlier 2016 he won the Horse & Hound Groom of the Year award.

BGA Executive Director Lucy Katan says “As someone who conducts himself with exceptional professionalism and has completely dedicated his life and work to his horses, we felt that Alan was a worthy recipient of this Award that we only present on special circumstances.”

The award was presented to Alan at Olympia International Horse Show on Tuesday 13th December, by BGA Chairman Chris Hewlett.

What the personal accident policy covers you for:

  • Whilst at work
  • All stable duties – mucking out, grooming, washing off, turning out
  • Clipping
  • Riding – including hacking and jumping
  • Hunting
  • Lunging
  • Breaking in
  • Holding horse for a vet and other procedures
  • Travelling horses both in the UK and abroad
  • Competing in line with your job including: jumping, dressage, eventing
  • Injuries that may happen to you whilst you are teaching - but you must also be grooming as part of your duties and not be a sole instructor

What the personal accident policy doesn’t cover you for:

  • Riding in a race, point to point or team chase
  • Stunt Riding
  • Accidents occurring whilst travelling to and from work
  • Riding and competing your own horse (but you can upgrade when applying for membership to include this)
  • Public Liability – this is a separate insurance policy - the Freelance Groom Liability Insurance
  • Care Custody and Control – this is a separate policy - the Freelance Groom Liability Insurance
