Karen Hughes Memorial Grooms Award 2018

Amy Akehurst groom of Regatta Girl and Don Zephyr (ridden by Tom D Crisp), is the second recipient of the Karen Hughes Memorial Grooms Award. The winner was selected from the CIC*”2 class at The Whatley Manor Hotel and Spa International Horse Trials at Gatcombe Park on Sunday 9th September.

This award, which was initiated last year, (first won by Lucy Miles groom to Jonelle and Tim Price) in memory of Karen following her courageous battle with cancer. So it is with great pleasure and with thanks to HRH Princess Royal, the organisers of the event and sponsor of The Whatley Manor Hotel and Spa International Horse Trials, Christian Landolt, that we were able to present this award at Gatcombe Park, a place that Karen regarded as her home for so many years.

Karen Hughes dedicated her life to all of the horses in her care and to Eventing as a sport. Working with some of the best horses and riders in the world, she travelled all over the globe wherever her horse went. She was a font of knowledge, offering help to anyone who asked, the horse would always came first, day or night. Her care and attention to detail were the highest you would come across. Hence the way this award is judged!

We would like to thank everyone at Gatcombe Park for allowing us to join them and present this Trophy in Karen’s memory. We would also like to thank The Mark Todd Collection for their continued support in keeping Karen’s memory alive.

‘Her dedication was her life; her life was her horses’.
