Hickstead Grooms working in over 100 degrees

As the UK records its second hottest day on record, BGA’s Lucy caught up with two #supergrooms in the National Stables at Hickstead to find out more about them.

17 year old Emma Forrest (right on image) is an apprentice with Allan Birch and Amy Morton.

My favourite thing is…
My horse, Calvin and together we love to jump.

I love Hickstead because…
This is my second Hickstead and I love it here. There are so many different things going on.

I would love to be a groom in the International stables one day.

My favourite thing about being a competition groom is…
Meeting new people, being outside, being with the horses and making sure they are well looked after.

When I was younger I wanted to…
Work with horses.

My pet hate is...
Someone who works with you who doesn’t pull their weight or work as a team.

I’d most like to go to dinner with...
Scott Brash. (Scott can you help?)

Emma’s colleague is 16 year old Elysia Cawood. Elysia has been working alongside Allan since she was 12 having previously ridden ponies for him. She is now a full time groom and is looking forward to starting an apprenticeship in September.

My favourite thing is…
I just love working with horses in general.

I love Hickstead because…
It’s one of my favourite shows because it’s a beautiful place and there are loads going on. The organisers are really nice and everything is really well done.

My favourite thing about being a competition groom is…
Having the horses looking smart walking to the ring, and the feeling you get when they do well in the ring.

It makes me proud to be a part of it.

My top grooming tip is…
Always carry a towel to the ring.

When I was younger I wanted to…
Be a rider. I still do ride a bit so I’d like to do a bit of both, but I’ve always wanted to work with horses.

My pet hate is…
Yellow stains you can’t get off!

I’d most like to go to dinner with…
Emma [Forrest]!

A huge well done to all of the amazing Hickstead grooms who, despite the heat, have done a great job to ensure that the horses in their care are getting what they need to perform at their best.

If you'd like to join the BGA then we'd love you to get involved.
