The eventing and horse world were saddened to hear of the sad passing of top international groom, Karen Hughes.

A very respected and dedicated member of the grooming community, Karen lost her battle with cancer yesterday.

Karen was a well known figure on the eventing circuit and had worked for some of the top names, including Andrew and Bettina Hoy. Karen had groomed at countless Olympic Games, World Games and Europeans and dedicated her whole life to top event horses.

Close friend, Sharon Mepham, said , " What I would say about Karen is that she was one of the best grooms on the event circuit, always willing to give advice and help to anyone that asked for it. Her dedication to the horses in her care was second to none. A genuine and lovely person will sadly be missed."

Andrew Hoy said, "I am very sad to hear about Karen loosing her brave fight against the cancer. She was my Head Girl for 14 years and we have had many wonderful experiences together where she has been a huge contributor to my success. We have been to 3 Olympics together - Karen lived her life for her beloved horses and our sport which meant everything to her. Karen will live on in the thoughts and memories of many people within the eventing world. Rest in peace, Karen.”

Last October Karen was given a BGA Lifetime Achievement Award at Burghley Horse Trials. This picture shows Karen with her eventing friends, all who will miss her humour and warmth on the eventing circuit.

The British Grooms Association sends its thoughts and condolences to Karen's friends and family.
