Jackie Potts, BGA Ambassador and International Event Groom has been nominated in the Horse and Hound Awards for 2024. We spoke to Jackie ahead of the awards night.

How does it feel to be nominated for this award?

I am a bit surprised! Obviously, I am very pleased, but I was just shocked! I am thrilled to be nominated though.

How do you feel awards like this make a difference for grooms?

I think they make a huge difference. They encourage others to recognise grooms, and no one can deny how nice it feels to be appreciated. I also think it is great for younger grooms to have these awards to aspire to.

How much has changed for grooms during your career?

I think the whole position has changed. If you want to, you can be so much more involved in a horse’s welfare than in years gone by. You can be involved in their feed, shoeing, vet care, and much more. Grooms are so much more on display now and, therefore, there is more emphasis on them.

What more would you like to see happen for grooms?

I want to see more encouragement for them and to see them take that and run with it. I really want to see grooms being hungry for their role and the sport. I think grooms should take all the opportunities presented to them. They need to keep asking questions, keep learning, and use the platforms that are available to them. It is always great to see them using their initiative.

We wish Jackie and all of the other nominated grooms the best of luck. They all deserve to be on the shortlist and hope they have a fab night!
